Cable Builder

General

The Cable Builder is a function that builds the records required for a cable and its cores or conductors. Component builders are started when you choose to add a component or to reselect the specification for a component.

Procedure

  1. Enter the name of the cable in the cable name edit box. A default name is provided by the name sequence assigned to the cable folder.

  2. You can choose the specification for the cable from the EDS catalogs. Click the Pick from EDS Catalog files button, then choose the desired cable specification.

A default map file is used to map the columns from the catalog file to the columns in the ratings record of the component. You can choose a different map file by clicking the Browse button.

  3. Choose or enter the core or conductor arrangement for the cable.

This describes the number of cores or conductors that the cable contains and the naming to use for the cores / conductors.

For example, selecting "2P + 2S + S" will create a cable with two pairs with a screen per pair and an overall screen for the cable. The cable will have seven cores / conductors.

Instrument Manager will pass the core or conductor arrangement to the Name Sequencer to be matched to the BLOCK1 column of the name sequence definition file. The Name Sequencer has core / conductor sequence entries for Instrument Manager that contain patterns to match various core or conductor arrangements. In this way the core or conductor names are derived from the type of core / conductor arrangement that is chosen.

Instrument Manager does not currently provide the option to match a cable type to a name sequence via a name sequence key (NSQ_KEY).

    • Click the Create one button to add the cable to the database without exiting the dialog. The cable name on the dialog will be updated to show the next name as determined by the cable folder name sequence. Further presses of the Create one button will add cables named incrementally.

    • Click the [OK] button to add the cable to the database and exit the dialog.

    • Click the Create all and close button to add the number of cables specified in the "Number of Cables" box, then exit the dialog.

If you are re-selecting the cables from the catalog then the number will be disabled, but clicking Update all and close will modify all of the cables that you have chosen to re-select from the catalog.

    • Click the Cancel button to exit the dialog without adding any further cables to the database.

Datasheet

For each new cable, the builder can create a datasheet. If you are reselecting the specification for an existing cable then the function will not add a datasheet.

  • When you exit the builder, you will be asked if you wish to add the output diagram for each new cable.

  • The automatically created output diagram is named by concatenating the diagram type followed by the cable name.

You may rename the diagram if required. You may remove the cable from the diagram and place it on another diagram if required.
