Use an Arbitrary Reference for Labelling Connections

Connections between devices and terminal strips can be labelled by a user entered reference rather than the component name. Each component is given an alias to be used in place of the tagname. All connections to that component will use the alias wherever the tagname is used in the connection annotation.

Using arbitrary references between devices and terminal strips is similar to the references used by the Grid System, except the Grid System uses a specific grid reference and uses fixed grid layout rules.

For information on drawing wiring diagrams in a referenced grid, see How to Generate Wiring Diagrams in a Referenced Grid.

Procedure

An alias can only be entered into an existing wiring diagram. The alias is propagated to other wiring diagrams by re-generating the diagrams.

  • Generate the wiring diagrams.

  • Use the Global Editor to edit the wiring diagram tag symbol for standard diagrams or the "wdboxhd" or "wdboxht" symbol for hybrid terminals, which show connections to existing equipment.

Editable wiring diagram symbols can be found in the "WD DEVICE" and "WD TERMINAL" block type in the Global Editor.

You can also use the CAD package's attribute editing command.

  • Edit the TAGALIAS attribute. This will be the second attribute, labelled ATT_2 in the Global Editor.

Enter the desired alias for this component.

  • Ensure Use Tag Alias is ticked in the wire annotation configuration.

  • Re-generate the wiring diagrams.

  • All connections to aliased components will now show the alias in place of the tagname (tagname is the item "Destination Device" in the the wire annotation configuration).

TAGALIAS used in WD Anchor blocks

The anchor blocks can have a TAGALIAS attribute which allows you to pre-program a template wiring diagram with a TAGALIAS alternate name for each device and use these aliases in references of your wiring diagram.
