Instrument Builder

General

The Instrument Builder is a function that builds the records required for an instrument, its terminals, a cable and any required output diagrams for the instrument. Component builders are started when you choose to add a component or to reselect the specification for a component.

Procedure

  1. Enter the name of the instrument in the instrument name edit box. A default name is provided by the name sequence assigned to the instrument folder.

  2. You can choose the specification for the instrument from the EDS catalogs. Click the Pick from EDS Catalog files button, then choose the desired instrument specification.

If the catalog entry specifies a cable to use with the instrument (in the CABLEMFG and CABLECATNO fields), then a new cable of the specified type will be automatically created and connected to the instrument.

A default map file is used to map the columns from the catalog file to the columns in the ratings record of the component. You can choose a different map file by clicking the Browse button.

  3. If the catalog specification for the instrument specifies a cable to connect, you may optionally connect the cable screen (if available) to the instrument, by turning on Connect cable screen to instrument. Note that this is not a typical scenario, so should not normally be turned on. If the cable specification has no screen, this checkbox has no effect. If no catalog specification was chosen for the instrument, then the checkbox will be disabled.

  4. Enter the first terminal name, and the number of terminals for the instrument.

If the instrument was selected from the catalog, the first terminal name will be set and will require no further configuration.

    • Click the Create one button to add the instrument to the database without exiting the dialog. The instrument name on the dialog will be updated to show the next name as determined by the instrument folder name sequence. Further presses of the Create one button will add instruments named incrementally.

    • Click the [OK] button to add the instrument to the database and exit the dialog.

    • Click the Create all and close button to add the number of instruments specified in the "Number of Instruments" box, then exit the dialog.

If you are re-selecting the instruments from the catalog then the number will be disabled, but clicking Update all and close will modify all of the instruments that you have chosen to re-select from the catalog.

    • Click the Cancel button to exit the dialog without adding any further instruments to the database.

Output Diagrams

For each new instrument, the builder can create a datasheet, hook-up diagram and loop diagram. If you are reselecting the specification for an existing instrument then the function will not add any diagrams.

  • When you exit the builder, you will be asked if you wish to add the output diagrams for each new instrument.

  • The automatically created output diagrams are named by concatenating the diagram type followed by the instrument name.

You may rename the diagrams if required. You may remove the instruments from the diagrams and place them on other diagrams if required.
